My name is Amy Cheng, and I’m born and raised in Vancouver, Canada.
Let’s start with Why the Environment? For me we have one Mother Nature and planet Earth and our population is forever growing which is majorly taxing on the Earth’s resources of soil and water.
Having said that and having seen what quarantining for COVID allowed the world to heal itself, I realized we can make a difference. That was when I started looking at eliminating single use plastic and soft plastics in Canada and other ideas of eliminating micro plastics in the ocean.
Not knowing where to start, I found a couple of communities: the Climate Restoration group and the Clean Planet Organization. What drew me towards Clean Planet is the hands-on monthly contribution of cleaning our local environment every 4th Saturday.
From this initiative, my husband Sean and I adopted six city blocks in our neighbourhood and became Seeding Stewards of a local Green Rainwater Infrastructure parklet.
A little more about the Seeding Stewardship initiative - it’s a City of Vancouver program that’s in our local neighbourhood that we’re passionate about - the 63rd and Yukon St. Green Rainwater Infrastructure.
We’ve partnered with local residents and a local high school for weed-pulling, clean-up, and planting events to reduce the invasive bindweed and Morning Glory plants in the area and maintain this important parklet. It’s a serene space with benches and beautiful indigenous sculptures and local flora.
If you’re interested in supporting this parklet, please feel free to email us at seedingstewardship@gmail.com.
