In July, we hosted our first community event in the Green Rainwater Infrastructure area – the park Amy and I care for in our neighborhood. There were eight of us who showed up to pull the invasive Morning Glory weed, a bindweed which chokes out native vegetation in the park.

This event was a success because of our preparation and invitation of our community. We made flyers, utilized teamwork in posting them around our neighborhood, and spoke personally with neighbors to invite them to join us. Among our group of volunteers was a woman who works for the city of Vancouver, as well as her colleague who works for the organization responsible for the grant we received to look after this park.

We filled six large compostable bags with leaves and weeds. I was surprised and encouraged by the enthusiasm of the people who showed up for the event. Everyone who attended showed up eager, ready and willing to work. This made for a really enjoyable experience: we made progress in cleaning our park and appreciated the camaraderie between everyone participating together.
