August Clean Planet Day - San Miguel de Allende (México)

It’s easy for me to focus on global conversations; such as what’s being done to address climate change or biodiversity decline. I think this has sometimes diverted my attention to the difference I get to make in my own community.

Local community events may be my favorite aspect about participating with Clean Planet - we get to make an impact alongside those around us, such as family, friends, and neighbors. And experience that person-to-person collaboration that is so fulfilling.

As August’s Clean Planet Day approached, we looked no farther than the neighborhood park just a stone’s throw from Veronica’s family’s home.  We completed our trash cleanup but also planted a tree that was growing too big for its pot on the patio outside Veronica’s kitchen. It was a true team effort – with Veronica’s mom, dad, and brother chipping in to find a new home for this tree. Veronica’s mom also agreed to look after it and make sure it’s getting enough water while we are in Colombia.

Also, in an attempt to discourage throwing trash on the ground in the park, Veronica painted a wooden sign with a butterfly (pictured here partially completed) to remind visitors that there are others who also visit the park.
